Night show · Puy du Fou España, Toledo
Horse riders, dancers and projections retell Spanish history on a vast outdoor stage at the edge of Toledo, after dark.
Likely to sell out. A seat is guaranteed when you book, so the date is the part to settle first.
The show in four facts

The show
The show follows María, a young washerwoman who meets the old Azacán of Toledo beside the Tagus at sunset. Azacán is an old Spanish word for a water carrier. He takes her back through time, and the centuries between the Visigothic king Recaredo and the arrival of the railway become the frame of the evening.
The park names Taifa King al-Mamun, Queen Isabella and Emperor Charles V among the people on stage. Toledo was a Visigothic capital, the seat of a Muslim taifa kingdom until 1085 and a city where Charles V held court, so the story is rooted in the ground it is staged beside.
The park gives the stage as 5 hectares, with 200 actors, riders and acrobats, and the ticket adds costumes, video projectors and water jets. It is an all-visual production with nothing spoken for you to follow, so a visitor without Spanish loses nothing.

Six chapters of history
The show is told as a trip back through time. These are the chapters of Spanish history it draws on, in date order, as the park and the ticket name them.
Read them as the historical backdrop, not a running order or a scene list. How the park stages each chapter is its own, and it can change from season to season.
The story begins in the age of the Visigothic kings. Recaredo ruled from Toledo between 586 and 601. He gave up Arianism for Chalcedonian Christianity in 587, and a council in his name, the Third Council of Toledo, met in 589.
Al-Mamun ruled the taifa kingdom of Toledo from 1043 to 1075, when the city was the seat of a Muslim court. The park lists him among the figures on stage. Toledo passed to Alfonso VI of León in 1085.
On 16 July 1212, near Las Navas de Tolosa in Jaén, a Christian coalition led by Alfonso VIII of Castile defeated the Almohad caliph. Historians treat it as a turning point of the Reconquista. The ticket names the battle among the show's episodes.
Isabella reigned as Queen of Castile from 1474 to 1504. In 1492 Columbus sailed west under her sponsorship. The ticket names the voyage into the Americas as one of the episodes the show retells.
Charles was proclaimed King of Castile and Aragon in 1516 and his reign as King of Spain ended in 1556. Toledo was the main seat of his court in Castile. The park names Emperor Charles V among the show's figures.
The last episode that the park and the ticket name is the arrival of the railway, where the story reaches the modern age. Toledo was one of the first Spanish cities to receive rail service.
